Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapists approach an individual’s care with a focus on function, assessing the effects of a disability on each person’s daily activities, either at home or through outpatient services at the hospital. Issues requiring Occupational Therapist assessment/treatment include:
- Self Care-dressing, grooming, bathing, toileting, self-feeding and swallowing.
- Mobility-need for adaptive aids like wheelchairs, scooters and walkers.
- Transfers-need for adaptive equipment and/or education on safe techniques.
- Pressure Wound Management-input on positioning and pressure relief mattresses or wheelchair cushions.
- Cognition-assessment regarding the impact of cognitive changes on an individual’s safety or ability to manage independently.
- Home Environment-barriers to safety or mobility.
- Simple Splinting for various arm/hand problems.
A physician referral is required.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists help to restore mobility and to keep you moving, with intervention in the home or through Out Patient services at the hospital.
Physiotherapy intervention in the home may include a mobility assessment and customized exercise programs to optimize functional abilities, promote independence, & prevent falls.
Physiotherapy intervention at Queen Victoria Hospital department focuses on the frail elderly and individuals that are at risk of falling, individuals recently discharged from an acute care hospital or a Rehab bed, and people in the community requiring ongoing intervention to maintain or gain maximal independence in their home.
Conditions accepted to the service include post-surgical (bone, joint,tendon or ligament), respiratory, complex burns, hand injuries (surgical or trauma), complex fractures, inflammatory conditions (Rheumatic Disorders), neurological patients (stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s & others) and vestibular disorders.
A physician referral is required.
Respiratory Therapy
Respiratory Therapy services are available for individuals with chronic lung disease, either at home or in the hospital, providing support for diagnoses and self-management.
Services may include, spirometry, COPD/asthma education, secretion clearance techniques, medication review, oximetry assessment and smoking cessation counselling.
A physician referral is required.
