Ariel Christman, Lactation Consultant

Ariel Christman, RM is a Certified Lactation Consultant (ICBLC) at Selkirk Medical Group in Revelstoke.  Appointments can be made on her website:  www.heartwoodmidwiferycare.com or by emailing her at heartwoodmidwifery@gmail.com.  She will see clients at her office in Revelstoke as well as make home visits to clients as requested.

Breastfeeding and lactation consultancy services are covered through Medical Services Plan (MSP) with a valid BC CareCard and a referral from a Family Physician.  Those who self refer or without MSP coverage would need to arrange for private payment.

Services include but are not restricted to:

  • Assessment of mother and baby concerns.

  • Observation of breastfeeding.

  • Assistance with breastfeeding basics (positioning and latch).

  • Assistance with use of equipment (breast pump) if indicated.

  • Individualized feeding plan.

  • Precision weighing your baby.

La Leche League – Sicamous

La Leche League Canada (LLLC) is a national organization whose trained volunteer Leaders provide experienced mother- to-mother breastfeeding support through a variety of programs. An acknowledged expert in breastfeeding, LLLC is a complementary adjunct to the health care system, valued by the health care system and society. The organization is an integral part of Canadian families’ health care, connecting with every expectant mother and accessible in every community. LLLC collaborates with communities to provide a variety of services to meet their needs and wants.
LLLC Sicamous group typically meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.  This is the closest LLLC group to Revelstoke.

Public Health – Prenatal, Maternity and Postpartum Support

Public Health Nurse services provided by Interior Health in Revelstoke include immunizations, breastfeeding support, prenatal/postpartum information, and supports for new parents.

Prenatal, Maternity and Postpartum Support

  • Pregnancy Testing and prenatal information
  • Postnatal follow up for moms and babies – you can expect a call and a home visit from a Public Health nurse.  New parents are encouraged to use these services and reach out anytime.
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Postpartum depression support and resources
  • Infant crying
  • Providing health information and screening (including development, health and safety)
  • Nursing support services for children with special needs
  • Child development parenting skills promotion and guidance
  • Dental, hearing, vision, speech and language services

Vaccinations and Immunizations

  • In BC, vaccinations are offered free of charge to protect children from 12 different diseases

Revelstork Holistic Doula Services provides support from the prenatal to postpartum period. They offer fertility support, infant and pregnancy loss support, childbirth education classes, labour and birth doula support, and breastfeeding support from a holistic perspective.

Selkirk Medical Group – Maternity Doctors

The Selkirk Medical Group has six maternity family physicians and one midwife working together in a collaborative maternity care team.  Maternity providers focus on family centered care and support mothers in their emotional and medical needs during this exciting time of life. Natural labor practices are promoted and mothers and families are supported during their prenatal, labor and postpartum experiences.  Four of the maternity physicians at Selkirk Medical Group have enhanced surgical skills and are available to provide cesarean section services at Queen Victoria Hospital.
