Public Health – Interior Health

Public Health helps people achieve better health by ensuring a safe and healthy environment, by offering health information and promotion and illness prevention services to both children and adults. The department offers the services below.

Public Health Nursing

  • Immunizations of Children and Adults
  • TB Screening & Follow-up
  • Communicable disease investigation and follow-up
  • Growth and Development screening, education, and follow-up

Family Health

  • Pregnancy Testing
  • Selective pre-natal services
  • Post-natal follow-up for moms and babies
  • Breast feeding support
  • Child development parenting skills promotion and guidance
  • Nursing support services for children with special needs

School Health Services

  • Immunizations
  • Referrals and assistance
  • School health promotion

HARMS Reduction

  • Free Naloxone Kits
  • Free safe drug use supplies (HARMS reduction supplies)

Education Referrals

  • Tobacco
  • Infant Development
  • Dental
  • Speech & Language
  • Safety and Injury Prevention

Speech & Language Pathologist

  • Identify preschool children with suspected speech/language problems
  • Assessment, with family participation, of a child’s speech/language levels and development of intervention programs
  • Support and monitoring of the family’s intervention program through ongoing consultation and therapy

Nutrition

  • Food and nutrition education
  • Supporting community kitchens, community gardens and healthy food policy
  • Resources for school teachers and health professionals

Dental Services

  • Lift the Lip Program – fluoride varnish and dental hygiene training/education for parents
  • Kindergarten screening
  • Preschool dental health promotion

Health Protection Professionals

  • Ensuring public facilities are safe to avoid food, water, and airborne disease outbreaks
  • Monitoring water supply, sewage disposal, and land use
  • Ensuring environmental safety of public swimming pools, beaches and swimming areas
  • Enforcing environmental health codes and standards
  • Auditing food safety in restaurants, and food processing and handling centres
  • Enforcing clean air policies and regulations regarding tobacco use and sales
  • Licensing and inspection of child and adult care facilities
  • Advice and information on health and safety
  • Investigation of complaints and serious incidents

Medical Health Officer

  • Communicable Disease Consultation
  • Regular MHO updates regarding current public health topics
  • Duty MHO line (24/7) 1-866-457-5648

Specialties: immunizations, hearing screens, baby clinics, influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, communicable & STD disease investigation, education, and resources, prenatal services, support for new mothers, services for children with special needs, tobacco education, school health services, and environmental health services. The public health team includes a public health inspector, health unit aide, public health nurses and speech and language pathologist.
